What's that code on the display? Look it up.
Every code the brands we sell print on a washer, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, range, cooktop, microwave or water heater — what the control saw, what to check in order, the fix, and the point where it becomes a warranty call.
Type the code as the display prints it, or pick a brand and an appliance to open its page. "lg oe" or "samsung dryer hc" works too.
How to read a code
Four things that make the tables below match the machine in front of you.
Write it down before you clear it
Most codes clear on a reset and come back only once the fault repeats. The letters and numbers as the display printed them — including a lower-case d or a 5 that looks like an S — are what the table matches.
The same fault, two spellings
Samsung moved from 4E to 4C in 2016 and LG prints OE where an older display printed 0E. The pages list the older spelling beside the current one, so look up either.
No display? Count the blinks
A dishwasher or dryer with no screen blinks a light in groups — three blinks, a pause, one blink reads 3-1 and spells the same F and E numbers a display would print.
Three outcomes, every code
Fix at home means the checks settle it. Check, then call means the checks may settle it and the tail is a service call. Service call means a part inside the machine — on a unit under warranty, a warranty call.
The brands on our floor, code by code
Only the makers we sell. GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint read under GE; Frigidaire Gallery and Professional under Frigidaire; Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana have their own pages beside Whirlpool.
Samsung
95 codesSamsung builds its own laundry, kitchen and refrigeration controls; the Bespoke line runs the same code set.
LG
76 codesLG builds its own machines and controls; LG Signature and LG Studio share the code set.
Whirlpool
76 codesWhirlpool builds Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana on shared platforms; the F-and-E codes read the same across them.

KitchenAid
48 codesKitchenAid is Whirlpool's premium kitchen line; the dishwasher and range codes are Whirlpool's F-and-E set.
Amana
38 codesAmana is Whirlpool's value line; the laundry and range codes are Whirlpool's own, with fewer of them.

51 codesGE Appliances builds GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint on one control family; the codes read the same on all four badges.
Frigidaire
64 codesFrigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery and Frigidaire Professional are one maker (Electrolux); the codes read the same across the three badges.
Electrolux
49 codesElectrolux builds Frigidaire as well; its own badge runs the same E-code family on laundry and dishwashers.
Bosch

A. O. Smith
29 codesA. O. Smith builds the gas and electric water heaters on the floor; the gas control valve reports faults by LED flashes.
Kind by kind, every brand that prints a code
Six displays that look like a fault and are not
Half the "it's throwing a code" calls are one of these. Nothing is broken; the machine is telling you what it is waiting for.
Child or control lock
CL, LOC, a key or padlock icon: the panel is locked. Hold the two buttons marked with the lock symbol for three seconds.
Demo or showroom mode
OFF OFF, dEMO, Showroom, Cooling Off: the lights work and nothing runs or cools. The manual names the button hold that turns it off; a refrigerator is usually Fridge + Freezer held together.
Door or lid open
dC, dE, dL, Door: the latch did not report closed. A towel in the gasket, a bottle on the lid or detergent on the strike plate is the usual reason.
Power failure
PF, Po: the power went out mid-cycle. Press Start to pick the cycle up, or run a Rinse + Spin to finish the load.
Vent check on a dryer
C80, d90, AF, Check Vent: the dryer measured the duct as restricted and cut its heat to be safe. The vent, not the dryer, is the fix.
Sabbath mode
SAb, Sb: the lights and alarms are off on purpose. Hold the Sabbath button or the pair the manual names to leave it.
When it's not a DIY moment
Everything on these pages is safe to look at with the machine unplugged or the gas shut off. These three are not a look — secure the appliance and call.
Gas smell
Close the appliance's shutoff valve if you can reach it safely, open a window, leave the room, and call the gas utility from outside. No switches, no flames.
Burnt smell, a melted plug, arcing
Shut the breaker off, not just the appliance. A scorched cord, plug or outlet means an electrician looks before anything is plugged back in.
Water that will not stop
Close the supply valve at the appliance first (washer, dishwasher, fridge line, water heater cold inlet), then unplug. Mop before you diagnose.
Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.
A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.
These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
