Error codes · KitchenAid · Ranges & ovens

KitchenAid range & oven error codes: the oven sensor, the door lock, or a key — a short list.

A KitchenAid range prints the oven's faults in an F-and-E pair — a stuck key, the oven temperature sensor, the self-clean lock, a wiring fault at the outlet — and the older control on a few models still prints the bare F1, F2, F3 and F5 of the last generation. The modes people call about (LOC, dEMO, SAb, PF) are states, not faults. The cooktop side of a range prints nothing; a burner that will not light, or an element that stays cold, is on the ranges-and-ovens troubleshooting page.

Covers: 2015-and-newer KitchenAid electric (KFEG500, KSEG700), gas (KFGG500, KSGG700, KFGC506), dual-fuel (KSDB900, KSDG950, KFDC506) and commercial-style ranges, and the KODE500 double and KOSE500 single wall ovens — one electronic oven control across them.

KitchenAid · First

Before you clear it

KitchenAid prints F-and-E codes; a dishwasher with no display blinks the Clean light in groups that spell the code.

1

The display prints an F with an E (F3E0, F5E1) on nearly every 2015-and-newer model; a few older controls print a bare F2, F3, F4 or F5 for the same faults, and the tables carry those as aliases. A wall oven prints the same family of codes as a range.

2

The reset: press Cancel, then switch the range's breaker off (an electric or dual-fuel range) or unplug it (a gas range — the cord is behind the storage drawer) for one full minute, then set the clock. A code that returns the next time the oven heats is real.

3

A code that shows only once the oven is hot, and clears when it cools, still counts — write it down before you reset; the control keeps no history a customer can read back.

4

The model and serial plate is on the frame behind the storage drawer (pull the drawer all the way out and look at the front edge) or on the oven door frame at the left; a slide-in has it on the side of the drawer opening, and a wall oven on the frame visible with the door open.

5

Gas smell at any time: knobs off, light nothing, open a window and leave the house; call the gas company from outside, then us.

Oven sensor open

What it means

The oven temperature sensor — the thin probe on the oven's back wall, up high — reads open; the control sees no temperature at all and will not heat.

Check first
  1. Breaker off (or unplug) for one minute and try Bake. A one-time code after a power surge stays gone.
  2. Look at the probe on the back wall: it stands straight out, not bent against the wall by a rack slid in hard or a sheet pan.
The fix

A sensor that still reads open is the sensor or its plug behind the oven's rear panel — a technician's part. The cooktop keeps working; the oven stays cold until it is changed.

Stop & call

F3E0 after the reset is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call. Use the cooktop meanwhile.

Oven sensor shorted

What it means

The same sensor reads shorted — a temperature far above anything the oven could reach.

Check first
  1. Breaker off (or unplug) for one minute and try Bake.
The fix

The same part as F3E0 — the sensor or its wiring; a technician's job.

Stop & call

F3E1 after the reset is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call.

Oven over temperature — bake

What it means

The control measured the oven hotter than a bake or a broil allows. Either the heat kept coming past the set point, or the sensor is reading high.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel. If the oven keeps heating with everything off, switch the breaker off and leave it off.
  2. Breaker off one minute; set Bake at 350°F with an oven thermometer on the middle rack and watch the first fifteen minutes — a reading that climbs past 400°F is a runaway.
The fix

An oven that runs past its set point is a relay stuck on the control board, or a sensor drifting low — either is a technician's part. Keep the oven off until it is checked.

Stop & call

An oven that heats past its set point, or heats with the control off, stays on the breaker until a technician has seen it — never a wait-and-see. On a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call.

Oven over temperature — clean

What it means

The sensor read the oven over the limit during a self-clean cycle.

Check first
  1. Let the oven cool fully, then breaker off one minute and set the clock.
  2. Try a Bake at 350°F with an oven thermometer on the rack; a bake that holds its temperature says the fault lives in the clean cycle alone.
The fix

A clean cycle that overheats is the sensor reading low or a relay on the control holding — a technician's part. Bake normally meanwhile; skip self-clean until it is seen.

Stop & call

F3E3 is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call. Leave self-clean alone until the part is changed.

Door switch and lock disagree

What it means

The door switch says the door is open while the lock motor says locked, or the other way round — the control cannot tell whether the door is shut.

Check first
  1. Close the door firmly; a rack pulled out past its stop, or a towel over the handle, holds it off the switch.
  2. Breaker off one minute; start a self-clean for a moment and cancel it, and listen for the lock motor move and come back.
The fix

A door that closes flat and still prints F5E0 is the door switch or the latch assembly — a technician's part. The oven bakes meanwhile on most models; self-clean waits.

Stop & call

F5E0 after the reset is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call.

Self-clean lock fault

What it means

A self-clean was started and the lock never reached the locked position in the time the control allows — or will not release afterward.

Check first
  1. The door is fully shut with nothing in its path, and the oven is empty of racks that the manual says come out for a clean.
  2. A door locked after a clean: wait — the lock holds until the oven has cooled below about 500°F, which can be an hour.
  3. Breaker off one minute, then start a clean and cancel it; listen for the latch motor.
The fix

A latch that never moves, or never releases on a cold oven, is the latch motor or its switch — a technician's part. Do not pry the door.

Stop & call

F5E1 after the reset is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call. A door locked shut comes free once the oven is cold; one that stays locked cold is the part.

Stuck key

What it means

The panel reads a key held down longer than any finger holds one — a shorted or stuck touch pad.

Check first
  1. Press each key once; feel for one that does not come back.
  2. Wipe the glass or the membrane with a damp cloth and dry it fully — a spill or a cleaner on the panel holds a touch key down.
  3. Breaker off one minute, on again, set the clock.
The fix

A key still stuck once the panel is clean and dry is the touch panel — a part; on many of these it comes as one piece with the oven control.

Oven control fault

What it means

The oven control board found a fault in itself or in its memory. The older control printed a bare F1 for the same thing.

Check first
  1. Breaker off (or unplug) for one minute, on again, set the clock and try Bake.
The fix

F1E1 that returns is the oven control board — a technician's part. Stop using the oven if the code comes with heat you did not ask for.

Stop & call

F1E1 after the reset is a service call; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call. Nothing at home reaches the board.

Neutral not connected

What it means

The control is not seeing the neutral it needs from the outlet — on an electric or dual-fuel range, a power cord wired without the neutral, or a 3-wire cord on a terminal block strapped for 4.

Check first
  1. This shows on a range installed or moved inside the last few days, or right after electrical work — the install, not the oven.
  2. Switch the breaker off. The cord's terminal block is behind the back panel on a 240V circuit, and it is the installer's or a licensed electrician's to open — not a home check.
The fix

The installer or a licensed electrician corrects the cord at the terminal block and the code clears on the next power-up. A range wired right that still prints F6E0 is the control — a technician's part.

Stop & call

F6E0 is the wiring until proven otherwise. Keep the breaker off and have the installer or a licensed electrician check the cord before the range is used again; a missing neutral can put 240V where the control expects 120V.

States, not faults

LOC#10

Also printed as Loc · Lock · Control Lock

Fix at home
Code

Control lock on

What it means

Not a fault. The oven keys are locked so a child cannot start it; the display reads LOC or shows the padlock.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the key the panel marks Control Lock (on many, the Start key or the padlock symbol) for three seconds until LOC leaves the display.
The fix

The oven answers again.

dEMO#11

Also printed as Demo · DEMO · Showroom

Fix at home
Code

Demo (showroom) mode

What it means

Not a fault. The display and the keys work for a sales floor, but no element, burner or oven heats. A range from a floor display or an outlet load sometimes arrives this way.

Check first
  1. The display shows dEMO, or every setting takes and nothing warms.
  2. Set the clock first, then press and hold the pair the manual names (on many, Cancel with the clock key, or the Start key held for about five seconds) until dEMO leaves the display.
The fix

The oven heats again. If the manual's pair does nothing on yours, a technician exits it from the control's service mode.

SAb#12

Also printed as Sabbath · SAB

Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode

What it means

Not a fault. The oven holds a bake with the lights, the tones and the display quiet for the Sabbath; the timer, the broiler and self-clean do not work in it.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the key the manual names (on many, the clock key or the Start key for about five seconds) until the display returns.
The fix

Normal control comes back; on most models the mode also ends by itself after about 72 hours.

PF#13

Also printed as Power Failure

Fix at home
Code

Power failure

What it means

Not a fault. The power dropped and came back; the clock lost its time and any bake that was running stopped.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel and set the clock — on most of these the oven will not start until the clock is set.
The fix

Nothing to fix. PF with no outage in the house is a loose cord or a breaker that is tripping; a 240V cord and outlet are a licensed electrician's to look at.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call KitchenAid's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
