Whirlpool refrigerator error codes: most of what the display shows is a setting, not a fault.

A Whirlpool refrigerator keeps its fault codes inside the service diagnostic; what the dispenser display shows a customer is a state — Cooling Off, Showroom, a door left open, a filter due. Nearly every call about one of them ends at a button. Find the words on your display below and take the checks in order; a refrigerator that is warm with no state showing is the one that needs a technician.

Covers: 2015-and-newer French door (WRF, WRX, WRMF, WRFF), side-by-side (WRS) and top-freezer (WRT) refrigerators.

Before you clear it

Whirlpool prints an F code with an E code (F9 E1, shown as F9E1). The F names the system, the E names the fault inside it.

1

A French door or side-by-side with a dispenser display prints words and short codes (Cooling Off, PO, the door icon). A top-freezer or a bottom-freezer with a dial has no display and prints nothing — a warm cabinet on one of those goes straight to the refrigerator symptom page.

2

The reset: unplug the refrigerator (or switch its breaker off) for one full minute, plug it in and give it 24 hours before judging the temperature. Most states clear on their own; a true fault code is in the diagnostic and is a technician's to read.

3

The service diagnostic is on the tech sheet behind the base grille (pull the grille off from the bottom) and it is written for a technician — the cooling test it runs is not a home check.

4

A Wi-Fi model shows the state and the next step in the Whirlpool app under the refrigerator's tile.

5

The model and serial plate is on the left wall inside the fresh-food compartment, near the top. Every warranty call starts with those two numbers.

The display's states

Cooling Off#1

Also printed as Cooling OFF · OFF

Code

Cooling is turned off

What it means

Not a fault. The cooling was switched off at the panel — the lights work, the fans may run, and nothing gets cold. It happens during a cleaning, a move, or a long press on the panel.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the two buttons the display names for Cooling On/Off (on most French doors, Lock and Temp together) for three seconds until Cooling Off goes out.
  2. On a model with a temperature display, the temperature settings show again once cooling is on.
The fix

Cooling comes back on; give it 24 hours to reach temperature. A refrigerator that stays warm with cooling on and no state showing is the refrigerator symptom page.

Showroom#2

Also printed as Demo · dEMO · Showroom mode

Fix at home
Code

Showroom (demo) mode

What it means

Not a fault. The refrigerator is in the mode the store floor uses — the lights and the display work, the cooling never runs.

Check first
  1. The display reads Showroom (some print it only when a button is pressed).
  2. Press and hold the pair of buttons the use-and-care guide names for Showroom on your model (on many French doors it is the same Lock-and-Temp hold as Cooling On/Off) for three seconds until the word goes out.
The fix

Cooling starts once the mode is off; give it 24 hours. The guide for the exact model is on whirlpool.com by model number and names the pair.

Door Ajar#3

Also printed as Door Open · Door Alarm

Fix at home
Code

Door open alarm

What it means

Not a fault. A door has been open more than about five minutes; the alarm chimes and the door icon shows. On a French door it is as often the freezer drawer as a door.

Check first
  1. Push each door and the freezer drawer shut, firmly; a drawer stops a quarter inch short when a box is sitting up behind it.
  2. A door that drifts back open is a refrigerator not tilted back enough — raise the front leveling feet a half turn each so the doors swing closed on their own.
  3. The gaskets are clean and seal all the way around; a gasket folded under at a corner holds the door off its switch.
The fix

Close the door and the alarm stops. If the alarm sounds with every door shut tight, the door switch is the part — a service call. Press any button to silence it meanwhile.

PO#4

Also printed as Power Outage

Fix at home
Code

Power outage

What it means

Not a fault. The power went out and came back; the display blinks PO (and may flash the warmest temperature the compartments reached) until it is acknowledged.

Check first
  1. Press the button the display names (Confirm, or any button on some models) to clear it.
  2. If the flashed temperature was over 40°F in the fresh-food side for more than a few hours, look at what is in it before the next meal.
The fix

Nothing to fix. PO with no outage in the house is a plug loose in the outlet.

Replace Filter#5

Also printed as Order Filter · Filter · Replace Water Filter

Fix at home
Code

Water filter due

What it means

Not a fault. Six months of use (or the gallons the control counts) have passed since the filter was reset; the dispenser may slow before it is changed.

Check first
  1. Change the filter — it turns out a quarter turn in its housing (inside the top of the fresh-food compartment on most French doors, in the base grille on a side-by-side) and the new one turns in until it stops.
  2. Run about 4 gallons through the dispenser to clear the air and the carbon fines.
  3. Press and hold the Filter button for three seconds until the light resets.
The fix

The light resets. A dispenser still slow with a new filter is the inlet valve or frozen water in the line — the refrigerator symptom page.

Ice Off#6

Also printed as Ice Maker Off

Fix at home
Code

Ice maker is off

What it means

Not a fault. The ice maker was switched off at the panel (or its wire arm was lifted), so the bin stays empty.

Check first
  1. Press the Ice Off (or Ice Maker) button once; the icon goes out when the ice maker is on.
  2. Inside the freezer, an ice maker with a wire arm has the arm down.
  3. A new refrigerator takes about 24 hours to make its first full bin, and the first two or three bins go down the sink.
The fix

Turn it on and give it a day. An ice maker that is on, with water at the dispenser, and makes nothing in 48 hours is a service call.

Lock#7

Also printed as Dispenser Lock · Control Lock

Fix at home
Code

Dispenser and panel locked

What it means

Not a fault. The dispenser and the panel are locked so nothing dispenses when a child leans on the paddle; the lock icon shows.

Check first
  1. Press and hold Lock for three seconds until the icon goes out.
The fix

The dispenser and the panel answer again.

Sabbath#8

Also printed as Sabbath Mode

Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode

What it means

Not a fault. The lights, the display, the dispenser and the alarms are off for the Sabbath; cooling runs as normal.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the buttons the display names for Sabbath (on most models the same pair as Cooling On/Off, or Temp alone) for three seconds until the display wakes.
The fix

The lights and the dispenser come back. The mode ends by itself after the time the control allows on some models.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call Whirlpool's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

Nothing on this page is a straight service call — every code here starts with a check you can make.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
