Error codes · Whirlpool · Ranges & ovens

Whirlpool range & oven error codes: most of them are the oven sensor, the door lock, or a stuck key.

A Whirlpool range prints an F-and-E code when the oven control finds something it cannot run through — a temperature sensor reading open, a door that will not lock for the clean cycle, a key the panel thinks is held down. Older ranges of the same families printed a single F number for the same faults, and the tables list those as aliases. Most of the codes are a technician's part; the states (LOC, dEMO, SAb, PF) are a button.

Covers: 2015-and-newer electric (WFE, WEE) and gas (WFG, WEG) ranges and the WOS and WOD wall ovens.

Whirlpool · First

Before you clear it

Whirlpool prints an F code with an E code (F9 E1, shown as F9E1). The F names the system, the E names the fault inside it.

1

A current display prints F-and-E (F3E0 — some show F3 E0); an older range prints one digit (F3). The tables list the single digit as the alias of its F-and-E twin where it is the same fault.

2

The reset: press Cancel, then switch the range's breaker off (or unplug a gas range) for one full minute. A code that comes straight back is real. A code that shows only during or right after a self-clean is the heat of the clean cycle — let the oven cool fully before judging it.

3

The oven's diagnostic and the code history are on the tech sheet taped inside the back panel or under the cooktop and are written for a technician; there is no safe home entry.

4

A gas smell at any time: stop, open a window, do not light anything, leave the house if it is strong and call the gas utility from outside. No code on this page comes before that.

5

The model and serial plate is on the oven frame behind the door (open the door and look at the left or right edge) or in the storage drawer opening. Every warranty call starts with those two numbers.

Oven sensor open

What it means

The temperature probe inside the oven (the thin rod at the back wall, top) is reading open — the control sees no temperature at all. Older ranges printed F3.

Check first
  1. Switch the breaker off (unplug a gas range) for one minute and set a bake. A sensor code that clears and stays gone was a power blip.
  2. Look at the probe at the back of the oven cavity: it is straight and nothing has knocked it (a rack slammed in, a pan pushed back).
The fix

F3E0 that returns is the oven temperature sensor — a part behind the back wall, a technician's job. The cooktop still works meanwhile.

Stop & call

F3E0 after a reset is a service call on the oven sensor. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call; the burners run while you wait.

Oven sensor shorted

What it means

The oven temperature probe is reading shorted — a temperature far higher than the oven could be. Older ranges printed F4.

Check first
  1. Switch the breaker off (unplug a gas range) for one minute and set a bake.
The fix

F3E1 that returns is the oven temperature sensor or its wiring — a part, a technician's job.

Stop & call

F3E1 after a reset is a service call. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call; stop using the oven until it is seen.

Oven too hot — bake

What it means

The sensor read the oven over the limit for a bake or a broil. Either the oven overheated or the sensor is drifting high. Older ranges printed F2.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel and let the oven cool with the door closed for an hour.
  2. Nothing is blocking the oven vent (on the cooktop surface at the back, or under a rear burner) — foil on the oven floor or over a rack sends the heat where the sensor sits.
  3. Reset (breaker off one minute) and set a bake at 350°F with an oven thermometer on the middle rack; judge it after 20 minutes.
The fix

An oven that holds 350°F on the thermometer and threw the code once was a one-off. An oven that overshoots, or prints F3E2 again, is the sensor or the control's bake relay — stop using the oven and call it in.

Stop & call

An oven that runs away from its setting is a stop-and-call: press Cancel, switch the breaker off, and leave the oven off until a technician has it. On a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call.

Oven too hot — clean

What it means

The sensor read the oven over the limit during a self-clean.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel and let the oven cool fully — the door stays locked until it has.
  2. The oven vent was clear and the racks were out (racks left in during a clean can hold heat against the sensor).
The fix

One F3E3 on a clean with racks in and a cool-down is a one-off; use the oven normally. A second one is the sensor or the control — a service call. Skip the self-clean until it is seen.

Stop & call

F3E3 that returns on the next clean is a service call. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call; bake and broil still run, skip the self-clean.

Door switch and lock disagree

What it means

The door switch says the door is open while the lock says it is locked, or the other way round. Older ranges printed F5.

Check first
  1. Open the oven door all the way and close it firmly.
  2. The lock latch (the hook at the top of the oven opening) is not stuck part way out; a towel or a rack catching it holds it there.
  3. Reset (breaker off one minute).
The fix

F5E0 that returns with the door closing flat is the door switch or the lock motor assembly — a part, a technician's job.

Stop & call

F5E0 after a reset is a service call on the lock assembly. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call; the cooktop runs while you wait.

Door will not lock for clean

What it means

The self-clean was started and the lock never reached locked in the time the control allows.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel. Open the door fully and close it until it seats on the gasket.
  2. Nothing is caught in the latch opening at the top of the oven frame.
  3. Start the clean again with the door closed before Start is pressed.
The fix

A door that seats and still prints F5E1 is the lock motor assembly — a part, a technician's job. Bake and broil still work; skip the self-clean until it is replaced.

Stop & call

F5E1 that returns is a service call on the lock motor. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call.

Key stuck

What it means

The panel sees a key held down longer than a key is ever pressed — a shorted or stuck touch pad.

Check first
  1. Press each key once; feel for one that does not spring back.
  2. Wipe the panel dry and clean — grease on a touch panel holds a key.
  3. Reset (breaker off one minute).
The fix

A key that stays stuck after a cleaning is the touch panel or the control it is part of — a part, a technician's job.

Oven control fault

What it means

The oven control board found a fault in itself or in its memory. Older ranges printed F1.

Check first
  1. Switch the breaker off (unplug a gas range) for five full minutes and set a bake.
The fix

F1E1 that returns is the oven control board — a part, a technician's job.

Stop & call

F1E1 after a five-minute reset is a service call. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call.

Return line not connected

What it means

The control is not seeing the neutral it needs — on an electric range the usual cause is a cord terminated without the neutral, or a 3-wire cord on a terminal block strapped for 4.

Check first
  1. On a newly installed electric range: the power cord was put on by whoever installed it, and the terminal block cover is back on.
  2. Reset (breaker off one minute).
The fix

A cord to re-terminate is a licensed electrician's or installer's job — 240V work is never a home repair. A range on a correct cord that still prints F6E0 is the control board — a service call.

Stop & call

F6E0 on a range with a correct cord is a service call on the control. A cord in doubt is an electrician's; leave the breaker off until it is checked.

Section 3 of 3

States that are not faults

LOC#10

Also printed as Loc · LoC · Lock

Fix at home
Code

Control lock is on

What it means

Not a fault. The oven controls are locked so a child cannot turn the oven on; the display reads LOC or shows the lock icon.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the key the panel marks Control Lock (on many models Cancel, or Start, or a lock icon) for three seconds until the display clears.
The fix

The panel answers again. The cooktop knobs are never locked by it.

dEMO#11

Also printed as DEMO · Showroom · Demo

Fix at home
Code

Demo (showroom) mode

What it means

Not a fault. The control is in the mode a store floor uses — the display and the keys work, the oven and (on an electric range) the elements never heat.

Check first
  1. The display reads dEMO (or shows it when a key is pressed).
  2. Press and hold the pair of keys the use-and-care guide names for your model (on many ranges Start and Cancel, or a numbered key sequence) until dEMO goes out.
The fix

The oven heats once the mode is off. The guide for the exact model is on whirlpool.com by model number and names the keys.

SAb#12

Also printed as SAB · Sabbath

Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode

What it means

Not a fault. The oven holds a bake with the display, the tones and the lights off for the Sabbath; the keys do nothing until the mode ends.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the keys the panel names for Sabbath (on most models Start and Cancel together, or a numbered key held for five seconds) until the display wakes.
The fix

The control answers again.

PF#13
Fix at home
Code

Power failure

What it means

Not a fault. The power went out and came back; the clock is blinking and any bake that was running stopped.

Check first
  1. Press Cancel, set the clock, and start the bake again.
The fix

Nothing to fix. PF with no outage is a loose connection at the outlet or the breaker — an electrician's look.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call Whirlpool's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
